Split Board
The split board is not a specific board, its a concept, and that concept is very simple.
Traveling with boards is expensive (sometimes impossible), and risky to your equipment. The fact is that the airlines now charge between $100 and $500 per flight, per board (if they take them at all)! And there is no guarantee they won’t break them.
And not all surf destinations have boardshops to buy or rent (assuming they have what you need), and certainly not your favorite shape.
The key to the split concept is that we can put it onto any model we make, allowing you to split your board into 2 pieces (or 3 for longer boards for airline travel), and pack it into our “split board” travel bag with all the rest of your gear (for 1-piece allowance flights). Once at the destination, the carbon shafts link the board back together, and the entire system is held into place with no more than 2 screws per shaft.
The board has a flex pattern, and weight, that is very close to a normal board, and the system is bomb proof. If your board breaks, it won’t be here! In fact, the carbon system makes your board stronger than a normal board, so chances of breaking it are reduced.
But we’ve taken it one step further. You can order your board with 3” or 6” extensions which slot into the middle. Combined with the adjustable 4 Way fin system, this means that you can “almost” have 3 boards in one.
Run the board short, with fins toed in, tighter cluster and splayed out for small gutless surf. Straighten the fins and open the cluster for waist high surf. Add the extension and toe the fins back in for a “longboard” style break so it’ll swim fast but be loose on the wave, or straighten the fins out and open the cluster for double overhead surf.
We’d never in a thousand years suggest that one adjustable board is better than having 4 boards with you on a trip, but given that most of us are not sponsored athletes with someone else paying for the boards and the excess baggage charge, having one board that does so much with so little compromise, is simply the best solution going.
The split boards are available in Intec and Flux Core construction,
on any board model we make.
